Yea, Stalin was far worse. The only one to give him a run for his money was chairman Mao.
Hitler and Pol Pot and the rest of that crew were second string compared to Stalin and Mao.
The fact that you bring up your great uncle who *only* spent 20 years in a labor camp as evidence that Stalin wasn't a brutal megalomaniacal tyrant is what's laughable.
"He spent a significant percentage of his adult life in a labor camp because of Stalin's paranoia, but he didn't actually die there, so Stalin isn't that bad". Really ?
What happened during Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union, effected all of the Soviet society, not to mention people in other countries.
What happened during purges effected a small fraction of Soviet society. Blaming it all on Stalin is like blaming all of McCarthyism on Harry Truman.
As time went on and Western Powers succeeded in destroying the Soviet Union from within then proceeded trying to destroy Russian Federation, it showed that Stalin's fears and foreign policy were well justified and that's why there is a boost in popularity.
