According to movies and literature of the 90's yes. In reality most survived and were rehabilitated. A lot of criminals got out on amnesty as well and were a huge problem. Factoring in average life expectancy at the time and length of sentences it wasn't as bad as was dramatized in post-Soviet smuta. My great uncle Noam was career military officer. Commanded Red Army cavalry unit during the civil war. He was arrested during the Great Purge and spent close to 20 years in the camps, was rehabilitated and returned home, lived to an old age. His wife waited all these years. Ironically, if that didn't happen, he would have been almost certainly killed in the first few months of the war like his siblings. Any Russian family can compare how many of their ancestors died during purges (in most cases none) and how many died during Hitler's invasion. Died at the front or while Geo-plan OST was implemented. To equate Stalin to Hitler is laughable. To ignore the realities of the time period and blame everything on Stalin is stupid.

Kolyma is tough, so are lots of territory in Russia, but there were always people who lived there and not just prisoners. The footage at around 2:00 shows Red Army POW's captured by the Germans. So much for the integrity of this video.
