I have an AR500 plate I use at the range that has stopped tens of thousands of rounds of various calibers. I can't imagine it would be any less effective if it were covered in rubber and stuck in a plate carrier. Are steel plates the best option in most cases?
No
Do they work?
Yes. There are literally hundreds of YouTube videos on them.
Everything is a balance. Maybe someone is on a tight budget and they can only afford $300 all in. It's steel plates or nothing.
Steel has advantage of being durable bouncing around in a trunk for years as an example, a very long life span. Etc.
I have a set of steel plates. I'm happy with them. Hope I never need them but I'm glad they're there in case.
If I ever buy a 2nd set I will get something like this

I also can't imagine it would be any more effective if I sent it to a lab for NIJ certification.
As for compromise, I doubt any of us have all the best equipment money can buy. So we are all making compromises. We just prioritize things differently.
Yup cause I said it wouldn't stop rounds. But hey nice try
If you care so much, you should buy him a nice set.
So what is the deal with this stuff? Been eyeing it for a few months now

I mean i showed him where to get some without breaking the bank
Let's not forget one of his reasons for buying rifle targets instead of actual body armor was
"Inexpensive level IV wasn't a thing at the time"
Yet now it is, and hes still telling people to buy rifle targets instead
Imagine having a round get stopped but dying from bleeding from spawling
I wasn't specifically addressing your comments.Yup cause I said it wouldn't stop rounds. But hey nice try
I have ceramics that I got from my buddy that's in the industry for a steal. I certainly wont be replacing mine every 5 years. Ceramics don't expire like milk. They get damaged over the years from hard use. Mine sits in a corner at the ready most of the time. And here's the inside scoop. Those expiration dates have more to do with the length of contracts. If you logically think about it, it makes sense. There's no way you could give an expiration date on something that could be compromised in a few days after purchase.I hope all of the ceramic fanboys are throwing theirs out and replacing every 5 years or they essentially have nothing.....
They say they have a 5 year shelf life and should be replaced. You might know more than the companies that make them though.I have ceramics that I got from my buddy that's in the industry for a steal. I certainly wont be replacing mine every 5 years. No. I'm just friends with a guy that tests and distributes them via large scale contracts. They say they have a 5 year shelf life and should be replaced. You might know more than the companies that make them though.
Does his company have a 5 year warranty on the steel plates too ?No. I'm just friends with a guy that tests and distributes them via large scale contracts.
No expiration date. Steel will last forever (and is also a perfectly fine for protection).Does his company have a 5 year warranty on the steel plates too ?
I bet it's not a 100 year warranty, even though the plates will still be fine after that.
Steel vs ceramic... I'd take ceramic. Trnds to be about half the weight. Pounds = pain.No expiration date. Steel will last forever (and is also a perfectly fine for protection).
Same. Ceramic definitely has the weight advantage. All just depends on what you're looking for and like with everything else your budget.Steel vs ceramic... I'd take ceramic. Trnds to be about half the weight. Pounds = pain.
Are they having a sale ...
Thoughts on this package.
