I just sold a pistol to friend who lives in Monroe county on Saturday. The soonest he could get an appointment to add it was July 6th. I still can’t believe they only do appointments for adding or dropping. I guess I’m spoiled in Erie county where I can do everything same day. I always thought Monroe county was more friendly to 2A but it seems like Erie county is way for friendly to 2A. It’s rediculous in how much variance there is from county to county in the same state. It should be the same for the entire state regardless of which county you deal with.

That started during COVID, and they just haven't taken it down yet. The last pistol I bought, I went straight to the clerk from the store. Figured what's the worst that could happen, they send me out. They never asked a thing about an appt, added the amendment and I was on my way.

270. Nine months by 30 days/ month count. No mail today, hence no word. Nearly a month has passed since @Irick and @RennBaer have recieved thier notifications and over 70 days since references were contacted. Technically 9 months is Friday as it's the 24th, but I have been consistent in my count as 30 days to a month. My estimation was correct that no word will be received before 270, and now my gut says past 300 days. Disappointing and frustrating doesn't clearly describe it honestly.

Welp, as always, until now 300, signing off.

Crazy! I'm pretty surprised that you haven't received a letter in the mail yet considering your references were called before mine. I actually received my permit last weekend—it only took 320 days!

Someone else on Reddit who applied in March said that their references were contacted after only 2.5 months, so who knows what is going on behind the scenes at the sheriff's office.

I'm hoping you hear something soon!

I meant to comment on your point about it should be the same for the entire state...I agree, but only if it got easier overall. It's more likely to get harder for the counties that have it easy than easier for the counties that have it harder. Equity In NY means suffering is acceptable as long as it's evenly distributed, well, for the masses anyway.

No it’s more of the wife is the type who views guns as a utilitarian item and you only need 1 gun for everything. She doesn’t understand why someone would need two guns or want two guns. So she views it as unnecessary and therefore unneeded. I have in the past pointed out “why do you need more that one pair of shoes or more than one purse?” But she has never understood.

Approved.

Whew. One of the longest days I've had at work in awhile in anticipation. As promised in the beginning WAY back when I didn't shave ( less once after references were contacted per my promise at the beginning, plus I was sick) .

So, for all who have followed, here are some of the details about the journey, with some further background not previously revealed. It all TRULY started in October of 2019. Yeah, that's right, 2019. A friend got me more interested in firearms that month, 3 years ago. I had recently moved to Rochester in 2018 and we went shooting. I was hooked. I couldn't WAIT to apply for my permit, but due to the recent move and restrictions on references ( minimum 3 years, all from monroe or additional hoops I would have to jump through) I decided to wait until the references seasoned. That's set me back roughly 1.5 years. I unknowingly thought a PP class was required ( isn't in monroe) and waited for an opening. Took the class in February of 2020.....the covid hit in March. Screwed everything up. Fast forward to August of 2021. New job, better employer. My employer, of all people encouraged me to go, even giving me the time off to get it done. Got the appointment set. That brought me to where this all started.

September 24th, 2021 @ 2:37 p.m. Application left with the clerk and shaver stored away. All told for me it was years, not days.

But for those who are following now or in the future the actual statistics are as follows-

Application dropped off September 24th, 2021 @ 2:37 p.m..

References were contacted and phone interviews with wife and I conducted 196 days later.

Letter of approval recieved today, June 21st post work.

All told, 270 days, 2 hours and 44 minutes from drop off to answer.

As to the beard..

Shaved once in April post reference contact, all within parameters, due to illness. 3 days clean shaven, beard restarted immediately post recovery. Still touting it today as of thier post. Shaving under consideration as I write.

Total beard length combined......

From clean shaven in the beginning until today...

7 3/4 inches. It will now go as I promised in the beginning. I had never grown a beard before, and have been called Santa for months, its finally over.

Congrats dude!! I am so very happy for you. I remember the excitement and relief I felt when I got mine. I didn't have nearly the same wait time or ordeal you did, but it was still way more than it should have to be.

Welp my plan is to first go to the firing pin in Bergen and rent, oh, I dunno, every handgun I can within the hour range time allowed LOL. But seriously, the purpose it to fire at least 3 they rent that I'm interested in to see which one works best for me.

My heart is set on an HKVP9SK.
Second place is a HKVP9.
3rd is a Sig Sauer M18.

Of the 3, if I shoot it best it will definitely be the HKVP9SK as my first purchase.

My second purchase very shortly thereafter will be a Gerson's 1911 C in 9mm. That one is my "pretty " gun, special occasions only LOL.

And my ultimate gun a couple of years from now will be a Staccato 2011. That one will only be a safe queen, a gift for my son when I'm gone.

Smith and Wesson Shields in 9mm are a plenty right now. Affordable little work horses in 7 or 8 round magazines. Flat single stack mags. I have big hands and the 8 round mag works well. My wife and her friend are okay with the 7 rounders.

So happy for you!!! After the details from your back story, this has been one long journey for you. Congrats!

Now just a little bit more waiting. FWIW, I received my permit just shy of 3 weeks after the approval letter.

Pretty sure TFP has the HKVP9SK to rent. I think it was one I tested out when I was there. You'll know better once you get it in hand. I thought for sure I was going to get a P365XL, but I ended up with a G43X. I just felt I handled the Glock better than the Sig. Until then I hadn't even considered Glocks. I really want to try a CZ P01 but I haven't even found one to handle yet.

Hell I added a pistol during covid lockdown when you had to do it by mail. I think the turnaround time was less than 2 weeks. I remember being surprised it took only a week.
