Why Use a Shotgun?

It has actually been proven on I believe the box of truth that buckshot and pistol calibered ammo actually penetrated more than .223 in drywall. The .223 fragmented due to the velocity while the pellets and pistol rounds remained intact and continued to penetrate.

Of course it depends on what .223 bullet is used. The light fast stuff is safer for hd use if someone is afraid of harming people in other rooms.

Regarding slug hunting (in places where it is NOT required): the old timers tell me that slugs are better in terms of less travel and brush cutting ability. So they say if you're hunting wooded areas or tighter fields, it may be a good idea to use slugs instead of a rifle.

I don't know how true what they're telling me is, but the old timers tend to know a lot of things.

Get a few bulldogs and feed them red meat like deer as often as possible. Any time you see a stranger always say "get em" and let them go apeshit (but don't let them actually out of the house or car to kill the people). Compliment them when they tear up a rabbit or squirrel. Then when someone breaks in, let them penetrate that person and don't pull them off. That's TRUE PENETRATION!

I've heard that too. I think it relates to the slower velocity. I've read articles that in Vietnam the 5.56mm rounds fragmented after hitting leaves while the slower .308 did not.

Because in NY it takes a minimum of 6 months to get a pistol license and you'll need something to protect yourself in the meantime. ;)

A Rifle or Pistol Calibered Carbine would serve you better for ALL home defense scenarios in that case. ;)

Please do, I would be very interested in the results. To be clear I don't think the round will begin fragmenting right away, but just that it will destabilize after the first drywall layer. If it hits another object side on at high speed it very well may fragment at that point. That's what I'd guess anyway.

I shot the Judge with regular 45 colts and shot shells and slug.
the slug gave me the most bang, but it was not bad at all.

The rifling Slings the shot pattern outward, seems positive for HD!

i want a SMITH!

Soooooo. For my movies. What ammo shall i use? 55 grain ok? Good, cause that is what I am using. 35-40 gr is for varmints.

I am too cheap to buy 77 grain ammo.

Besides. MOST EVERYONE has 55 grain loaded in mags. Dont make me come over and check.

So, while this fantasy bs countinues how many pieces of aheet rock am i gonna have to use?

Oh! Pleaee pay attention cause my reloads will ALL be done closed bolt with 30 rounds in the mag.

After 2 sheets of drywall and 4 inches of insulation most pistol calibers lose a whole lot of energy. If you want to do a "realistic" test use 2 pieces of painted drywall with 4 inches of insulation in between (6 for some walls) and put a chicken 3 to 10 feet away from the wall. I think you'd be surprised at what you come up with.

I run 77gr, or 69gr SMKs when the former isn't available. It's the IMI stuff, I don't think the bullets are actual SMKS but similar. It's not as cheap as blaster ammo but. I can afford to keep between 1 and 2k on tap. From what I've read the heavier SMK loads fragment just as readily as t he lighter stuff. I think M855 would provide a good baseline for a drywall test.

If we're gonna add insulation to the mix then were going to have to assume it's an exterior wall, no? If so you should be doing sheet rock, insulation. 1/2 plywood or obx, siding and the foam that goes under it. At that point it's likely that most uninvited "guests" come into your house at night when no one is outside so the projectile would have to go through all that to get into your neighbor's house just like it did to exit yours. Personally, I'm more concerned with my kids in the other room which would most likely mean just 2 pieces of 1/2" sheet rock.
