Lasik (and its variants) exacerbates the degradation of near field vision. It is one of the things they underscore to people of a certain age who consult about the surgery.
To further cheer you up, if you are male, as you get older you lose

Hi Alistair.
What works for some shooters is to have a pair of eye glasses with the dominant eye set to focus on your front sight. The other glass for the non dominant eye is set for distance. If you are shooting with both eyes open your brain should resolve the images.
hmm...just saw that...
Still 2 slots available Alistair.
In 2016 the NRA changed Basic Pistol to a "blended learning" format, where the new course is online (Phase 1) and finishes up with Phase 2 (hands on with an instructor). This costs $60, payable directly to the NRA.
All new pistol instructor candidates are...
I think he meant to refer to Comey's actions a few weeks back, when the FBI decided to significantly downplay and downgrade Hillary's sieving of classified info.
Must be that.
Left eye dominant + right handed shooter with a messed up left hand (so not much long gun or shotgun) from my left side due to the impact.
Depending on the distance, I use one or both eyes. For precision work (example, a 3" circle at 15 yards) I close one eye. Usually keep both eyes open for...
What county are you in? NYC? Ugh.
Westchester? Less ugh-ly. After your 4th gun the county is supposed to send detectives to your listed address to make sure you have a safe.
They work by attenuating sounds above a certain threshold - for example everything above 100dB get clamped down 30dB (not real numbers.)
I assume the more sophisticated systems have the ability to change that threshold. Most have a volume knob.
When I am on a plane - where I spend too much of...
I think every case should be looked at dispassionately, looking at the facts as known and make application of the law based on those findings. Don't matter if the victims are kids, blacks, women, alt-genders or if the party under scrutiny is .gov, a corporation, the police, the feds, Hillary...
Looks like a great frigging day!
Not bad. The only suggestion I have is next time maybe I could help you shoot some of those rounds and those fun toys? Wouldn't want you to get fatigued now...
Your mileage, and opinions may vary. :)
My first consideration: Am I on land, or at sea? What are my odds for ending up on a vast body of water where I cannot reasonably expect to swim to land?
aside from that,
The most important consideration any of us have for what to put in a survival...
Agreed. I often ask in the (my) RSO course... "what is your most important concern when operating a range, indoor or outdoor, but especially an outdoor range for when you are preparing to do your range inspection before opening?
Most people say "electricity".
First climate, then terrain...
Usual disclaimer :): I am a Glock advanced armorer. So there is a high probability I have NFC (no f*** clue).
Specifically, do you want to reduce your trigger pull? If yes, a different ("3.5lb") connector will usually do the trick. The downside is, the actual wall where your trigger breaks more...
Ok. Let us do this instead...I am going to assume you have never had a background clearance required to deal with government classified material.
FROM WHAT I KNOW OF WATCHING TV, people who currently have a security clearance are not supposed to speak of it out in the open. Now, the movies I...
Thanks Tog, I saw the thread, and posted in it.
Mods, if you want to lock this up, we can bitch at the man and the system equally competently in the other better thread.
Full disclosure:
Lou is a friend, a most excellent paramedic, gunsmith, and training colleague. He's done a few handgun transactions for me, a evil black rifle when we could no longer have them, and I've purchased, begged and borrowed all kinds of shit from him. He is the kinda guy where if you...
Chris Fry (MDTS) is near you, and he is pretty damn good. I've trained with him, he has sent people my way, one of his assistant instructors also works with me. I've also heard good things about Rochester Personal Defense.
My goal is to help to raise the awareness and abilities of ALL gun...
He's smart. I do similar things - there is always something to be learned or refined, if you keep an open mind. Some of my certs require continuing training and education. I don't always want to recycle thru the same courses, so I will sometimes sit thru something I "should" already know, and...
Yup, was up that area for work earlier this year - exit 33/Verona. LET ME KNOW if you would like me to holler at you the next time I am up there doing anything pistol related.
Hi Miles,
Can you please remind me whereabouts you are? I get invites from a few ranges every year to teach, most of those classes are never made public, but I always reserve the option of having one or two slots in those classes.
I don't want to say shooting pistol is easy, because it is not...
Hi,
We are conducting an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor course that culminates on Sunday November 13th 2016 at the Blue Mountain Sportsman Center in Cortandt (Peekskill) NY. Shooters would be needed for two hours, from 1:30pm - 3:30pm
I am looking for 3-4 relatively NEW pistol shooters who would...
Friend of mine is getting a lot of flack from local residents for opening a gun store in their tony nabe.
He's lived there a while and they never had a problem with his garage FFL, or the exorbitant taxes he pays. Since our dear great eternal leader directed the ATF or whoever they are to...
One of the biggest issues I ever had and I've ever seen with internet forums is, people sometimes forget about being people, and become either larger, smaller or different than life on a forum. If we took a head count for all the people IN THIS THREAD, and had us meet on the range 2x a week for...
Cut my ring finger pretty bad on manipulating a charging handle on an AR. Needed to go to the hospital cause the thing swolled up real bad. Apparently the docs think I get tetanus or some weird stuff.
What I did get apparently was some strain of MRSA while in the hospital. NO ONE wanted to...
So no heavy lifting for a while I take it? Any rehab, or just rest?
Welcome "back again"!
Sorry, that was a bad pun. I meant welcome back as in welcome to the new old site - nothing to do with your back.
Just means you are on the "in"!
On a serious note, when the other thing at the other place occurred I was not on the forums much due to work. Two members here (and I thank them for thinking of me, seeing that I was suck a dweeb over at the other place! :) ) sent me txt messages or emails...
Yeah, but to not table viable scenarios leaves one less prepared if those are the cards we are dealt in that instance. :).
Admittedly, we would run out of brain cells before we could consider even 1/10th of 1% of all "viable" scenarios, so yes we plan for the most likely. No sense in prepping...
Yes, but if you are careful and shoot it in the head, you are able to recover most of the meat. If I had 9mm as my sole round, I would hope to also have a long gun chambered for 9x19 as well.
Depending on your environment one might have to resort to trapping versus shooting game if stealth from...
I just checked on an Android phone and an ipad mini. Both loaded fine.
Do you mind telling me what platform you are using? Sometimes there are issues with Opera, and Internet Explorer.
If there was ever a thread to "like" the whole thread, this right here is it.
Gonna try and take a picture of my carry gun tonight. In the meanwhile my avatar has my #1 training gun!
What kind of dear? Like a , rabid, out of control, murderous ex-mother in law? Or the 4 legged type?
10mm can also be loaded across a very broad spectrum. There are however maybe 100x as many guns chambered in .357MAG compared to 10mm.
Completely agreed.
I was raised in the Caribbean. Hurricanes are as frequent, and sometimes as long as baseball season. Unfortunately most people don't have the wherewithal or disposable income to have stored provisions. So each hurricane season with an impending strike there are people who...
Ok. So far unanimous. I have a .357/.38 gun and to my recollection that round is supersonic from 125gr all the way up to 180gr (I guess it depends on how many grains of powder it is sitting on.
Ok. So far each of you has gone for a rimmed, supersonic cartridge as your primary over rimless...
