I haven’t ruled out that option, but in pricing it out, I can buy a bolt gun in 6.5 creedmore for less (I may still do that). I’m really just trying to weigh my options at this point.
When we’re precision cleaning metal parts at work, we have 3 tanks set up. It goes soap sonic -> spray rinse -> clean water sonic -> spray rinse. That gets things SUPER clean. If you really wanted, you could to soap, spray, clean sonic, but that’s probably overkill.
We've been getting deer in our back yard around the same time every night for the past week or so. Saturday night when I pulled in the driveway from hunting, I asked my son how many deer he thought were under the apple tree. There weren't any, but they did show up about 10 minutes later. We...
Most likely. I think we were the only ones parked there this weekend lol. I think anyone else we saw came in by the tracks or the bowman’s club (and lord did we see people)
I saw the 70gr stuff. I'm surprised, it drops to below 1000 ft-lb before 100yds. I know it's a heavier bullet, but damn.
The personal protection one brings up an interesting point. Would defense rounds be appropriate to use?
I'm definitely overthinking a bit. That's my standard MO when I'm trying something new. In this instance, I really want to be as ethical as I can when hunting, leading to even more overthinking. What I'm finding is that ideally you want about 1000ft-lb of energy at impact, so I'm also...
Lord don't I know it. My youngest was on the crew for the school play, and we had to pick him up from school at 9pm 4 days a week. The number of deer I saw on that drive was insane.
State laws for youth hunters don't allow hunting from an elevated platform. No, it doesn't make sense and even the DEC wants to see the law changed.
On the plus side, the blind is WAY warmer than a stand, and more comfortable. But it definitely puts us at a disadvantage from a perspective...
I'm not looking to take super long shots. Maybe 100-150yds max. Where I'm currently setup on a pipeline, it's 45yds across, and my longest shot from that position is just shy of 100 yds. I can't imagine we'll stay there, but probably won't move too far from it either, as we're getting a lot...
I'm not a fan of head/neck shots. The margin for error is just too small.
I'm coming at shot placement with an archery mindset. I need/want broadside/quartering away shots, and not trying to blow through a shoulder.
I want to use my .223 to deer hunt, and I'm having a really hard time sorting out what's what, and what's ok to use and what's not.
The barrel has a 1:8 twist, which as gest I can tell, I can use up to ~80 grain bullets (and I want to go with the heaviest bullet I can for energy reasons). I'm...
No venison in the freezer yet, and my son is starting to get discouraged. We've seen deer every time we've been out (nearly a dozen each time), which is a huge bonus, but lately they've all been behind our blind in the woods, not in front of us in the clearing. He's really annoyed with the...
I got access to land on Papermill and Agar. We got a late start, so I found a spot and threw up a blind and we're just crossing our fingers. We did have a buck and doe come check us out while we were setting up a couple weeks ago, so I hope that's a good sign for us. I'm hopeful that next...
My oldest (12 years hold, his first year hunting) got invited on a duck hunt a couple weeks ago. He was happy as a pig in shit. It was awesome seeing his trap skills transfer over to hunting.
Now, I just need to figure out where I can take him duck hunting again that doesn't require a boat or...
Do me a solid and kick a couple of those a bit farther south for me. I'm going to be over on Wadsworth property this year with my kid and really hoping to see something for his first year hunting.
One thing you can also do, if you have small parts, you can use something like a mason jar filled with cleaner and put that in the sonic filled with water. It'll work through the jar, and you won't have to chase parts.
This doesn't change my opinion of her in the slightest, but it's a potential bonus for my son. He's only 12 and not strong enough for a compound, but this would allow him to get out during archery if he so chose.
Not only that, but a security guard at the mall saw it on camera, saw him get on an elevator with it, and still called it in. SO many people are complacent in this, it's wild.
AND he was taken to the station for questioning. once they saw it was an umbrella, that should have been the end of...
My wife actually discovered that she's friends with someone that's a member there that would sponsor us. If I end up actually following through (damn ADHD, I swear, I suck at following through) and getting a membership there, I'd be happy to sponsor you.
I was actually a member at LGC years back. A neighbor hooked me up with the membership back before the ranges were locked down and all that. It was a decent range, but I never got into the meetings and stuff and let my membership lapse.
I ended up getting an email from sportsman warehouse about a sale they’re having. I ended up getting a Tristar Cobra III 20ga pump. It’s not top of the line by any stretch of the imagination, but it should get him going for a while.

Yeah. I got the sense from the instructors (volunteers from the club) were pretty annoyed with many of the current laws, though there was some hedging toward FUDD a couple times. I'll have to find a sponsor, but I'll probably pull the trigger on it sooner rather than later.
My son recently took his hunter safety course at the HF&GC and at the end, they talked to us about membership to the club and how reasonably priced it is ($40-$45/yr family rate). I'm curious if anyone has ever been a member there, and if it's worth doing, or any other experiences with the club.
I'll admit I've pulled away from shooting a bit because things have just gotten so damn complicated as of late with the new laws and the back and forth rulings. It's mind boggling to keep track of.
Is there a resource out there to help track/understand not only the laws, but the ongoing...
In doing some digging, the Mossberg 510 mini super bantam looks like a solid choice. I'm leaning shotgun because while we live in a rifle county, slugs are still an option. Couple that with the flexibility of the adjustable LOP, and the fact that it can accept 500 stocks (possibly 500 barrels...
I do plan on throwing some target load in that for him to try some bigger bang than he's used to. I have some rifled slugs for it as well, but I'm hesitant to have him use this gun for it just because of the single bead sights. It'll be a challenge for him to aim it. BUT, it's not out of the...
I am thinking about getting him something like one of those little .22LR crickets, one that he can call his own instead of borrowing mine or his mom's.
Good point. He's in the neighborhood of 85-90 lbs, so he's not a terribly big kid. He hasn't grown into himself yet.
.243 was something I was thinking of as well.
It's certainly worth looking into. I'm still a bit unsure of what he'd hunt with that outside of squirrels.
Granted, it would be a start. I'm really hesitant to jump to a shotgun for him before he gets a chance to feel some recoil.
