I wish either the RMR or any other similar lo-pro, high durability optic incorporated a rear sight notch into the body of the sight the way the Delta Point pro does. I don't like how large the DPP is, or the way the brightness settings work.

The Chinese Holosun 407k/507k does. They work but are Chinese.
Did I mention they are Chinese?
I am actuall not at all prejudiced against Holosun despite their Chinese origin. In fact I had planned on putting a 515 on my upcoming "pistol" but red dots in general, and Holosuns in particular, are difficult to come by at the moment. Hence the MRO.
Which seems pretty nice anyway.
Wish the RMR cc had a notch but I'll get over it. I'll pay the extra coin and stick with trijicon. Plan on putting the cc on my p365 and no irons. I'm all in with RDS.And better than every other option on the market (other than maybe the RMRcc.. same goes for all the Holosun handgun dots, 407,507,508, and 509. All better than literally every other handgun optic on the market other than the RMR, and easily argued close to or on par with the RMR.... 509 beats the Aimpoint ACRO)

I think all current production MROs fall into an unofficial 2nd gen. The one I have has less tint to it than the earlier ones I have looked through which had significant amounts of blue tint. It also has a sharper dot than I remember seeing in older MROs. Nevertheless I got the standard dot only version in red. For the 5 year battery life.Is it the first gen or newer mro? Both solid options.
I think holosun stopped shipments until they took care of the lawsuit which is now taken care of
I will always strongly advocate a "buy once, cry once" philosophy when it comes to anything fireams related. I will always spend the extra coin for top quality.Wish the RMR cc had a notch but I'll get over it. I'll pay the extra coin and stick with trijicon. Plan on putting the cc on my p365 and no irons. Don't forget to get all of the different plates you'll possibly need.
Plates???
For the Trijicon RMRcc you need a specific plate for each pistol - M&P, Walther PPS, Kimber Micro 9, Kimber 1911s, Glock, Springfield Hellcat, SIG 365... the plates are $50 or so each.

I still think direct milled is the way to go. Are suppressor height sights still necessary when this route is taken? Or will standard height cowitness?

If you mill the slide you don't need any plates. With a poop emoji back at ya.For the Trijicon RMRcc you need a specific plate for each pistol - M&P, Walther PPS, Kimber Micro 9, Kimber 1911s, Glock, Springfield Hellcat, SIG 365... the plates are $50 or so each.

Really interesting thread, because I've been thinking for a while that a red dot sight might be a good solution for my aging eyes. So with concealed carry, do you switch the sight on when holster your pistol to go about your business, and only turn it off when you're done carrying for the day? And if so, how long does the battery tend to last?
With a quality optic you leave the sight on 24/7 365.
Trijicon RMR (what i carry with and recommend) Trijicon states the battery lasts 4 years on brightness setting number 4 (middle setting).
Most people (and I fall in this category as well) recommend changing the battery in an RMR once every year. Pick a day on the calendar that you will change out the battery every year and rezero the optic. (I do it on my birthday week) RMR uses a CR2023 battery soo it cost like $2 a year for batteries and you can get a 4 pack for around $8.
The holosun 407c/507c/508c v2 use a CR1632 battery and on just dot only in the middle setting Holosun claims 10 year battery life (specifically the 507c middle brightness setting dot only).
Which again single battery can be had for about $4 and personal would still change the battery once a year.
One thing people claim is an advantage with Holosun over Trijicon is the side loading battery which means you don't have to take the optic off the slide to change the battery.
But again this only needs to be done once a year how big of an inconvenience is that really??
So to answer the main question about turning the dot off or leaving it on.
With the right dot you leave it on always.
For comparison
The two Vortex red dots people for some reason put on their handguns have about 150 hour battery life or less than a week.... sorry but I'm not changing batteries every 3 days...
Aimpoint claims the ACRO has a battery life of 1.5 years but most claims I have seen is 3-6 months, which isn't terrible (not at all what I think it should be from a company like Aimpoint) but one can change the battery on the first of every month and still be confident in the dot being on when you need it. The ACRO uses a CR1225 and I've seen 5 packs for less than $6 or a single Duracell for about $9. So I would test the lower cost options for battery life which would make the yearly operation cost less than $15 or the Duracell would be about $100 a year..
Well kinda.. depends on what gun you are having milled and for what optic

Wow, I had no idea - thank you for filling me in!
The Holosuns (and I presume others) also have a "Shake Awake" that turns the dot off after a certain amount of time (15 minutes or so), then turns back on when it detects movement. I've tested it and it seems to work well - I can open my safe and see that it is off, but when I pick up the gun it turns on.
I've read of a few reports of the "Shake Awake" (I think that is Holosun's term) not working 100%.
What zero are you guys using ?
I’m zeroed at 25 yards , I don’t like that at defensive distance I have to hold a couple inches high . I’m thinking of a 10 or 15 yard zero , thoughts ?
