Can the SCAR 17 be top loaded with a fixed mag?
Yes. The entire lower pops off with one pin
Can the SCAR 17 be top loaded with a fixed mag?
Thank you! Do you think the mag can be fixed with a t-nut as is commonly done with the ar15 platform? I ask because I've never worked on an ambi mag release like the SCAR 17 has.Yes. The entire lower pops off with one pin

Aww yeah! Feeling the itch for a SCAR 17S!Probably.
You could modify a bullet button for sure.

Too weird, foreign, and could be discontinued at any time leaving no spares.Move out of NY then get one of these

and put one of these

or these

on it, boom done.
Its an upgraded AK, how weird can that be? How many spares do you need? Just get a couple of spares of the usual supects and pack them away ahead of time. Its a very high quality gun to begin with I doubt you'd have much in the way of problems anyway. You should be complete with all T&E before putting any firearm into the defensive rotation anyway.Too weird, foreign, and could be discontinued at any time leaving no spares.
Given the time and patience one could do it. One could also get a muzzle-loader upper, I guess.
But the question is why would anyone do that on a perfectly good rifle? If one is concerned about NY SAFE BS compliance then there are other options as effective or even more effective than a fully functional SCAR17.
There's no reason to have polymer on an ak knockoff. The original Galil/Valmet was superior. Its an upgraded AK, how weird can that be? How many spares do you need? Its not the whole lower, its basically just the magwell part which is integral with the grip. This allowed the 308 version to use SR-25 mags which is a massive plus and that alone makes it superior to the orgininal Galils. Add a full and integrated M1913 rail and measures to seal up the action and you have the best Kalashnikov pattern rifle ever made. There's no reason to have polymer on an ak knockoff. It would be extremely awkward. You'd need 3 hands. One to hold the upper, one to hold the lower, and one to hold the magazine. It doesn't hinge like an AR does.I don't understand. How exactly would it be different than loading any fixed mag AR?
Does the additional complexity lessen the upper/lower slop?It would be extremely awkward. You'd need 3 hands. One to hold the upper, one to hold the lower, and one to hold the magazine. It doesn't hinge like an AR does.
I don't know. I cannot own one.Does the additional complexity lessen the upper/lower slop?
Why can't you own one?I don't know. I cannot own one.
Because I don't play the fixed magazine route. And if I go featureless, what benefit do I get from that that an AR cannot give me?Why can't you own one?
Why three hands? Wouldn't the mag and lower be joined as one?It would be extremely awkward. You'd need 3 hands. One to hold the upper, one to hold the lower, and one to hold the magazine. It doesn't hinge like an AR does.
I guess if you epoxy the mag release. Why three hands? Wouldn't the mag and lower would be joined as one?
Is there some reason I couldn't lay the barrel down on the ground, a table, or my lap while I reload the mag?I guess if you epoxy the mag release.
You'd still need 3 hands when you go click though. You'd have to separate the lower from the upper, bite down on the barrel to free your left hand, reach into your pocket and manually load 10 round one at a time, grab the upper from your mouth, and resume firing.
What if you are running to cover to reload? Or you need to run from the cover you are at to another one?Is there some reason I couldn't lay the barrel down on the ground, a table, or my lap while I reload the mag?
Unholster my manly 1911 and give the perp some well deserved ballistic treatment with the greatest pistol round ever created by Zeus - the 45 acp! What if you are running to cover to reload? Or you need to run from the cover you are at to another one?
If he's wearing a frying pan or behind any common hard barrier, you'd be screwed though. That .45 wouldn't penetrate.Unholster my manly 1911 and give the perp some well deserved ballistic treatment with the greatest pistol round ever created by Zeus - the 45 acp!

So you are saying a fixed mag SCAR 17 is the same as a fixed mag AR in operation? If it is for using the rifle nobody wants a fixed mag in a firearm that was not intended for it, lets say unlike like a M1 Garand.
If it is for NY BS compliance to keep in the safe or for Tacticool Show & Tell only then that is a different story. In this case a cumbersome
and inefficient reloading system is not critical I would think.
So I guess it depends if the person is looking for cosmetics vs. efficiency and reliability.
Unless you are wearing heavy ceramic plate, a .223 will punch through any vest a .308 can.
In the box of truth, they both punched through 3 level 3 rated pistol vests I believe. In a SHTF scenario, I doubt we will see people wearing more than pistol vests. Rifle vests with plate weigh in excess of 25 lbs.
After a few days of wearing 25 lbs, it'll be taken off. Trust me.I wouldn't be so sure about the types of vests people would be wearing. It's easier now more than ever to buy good quality carriers and plates and have been selling like hotcakes for the past few years accordingly. I just weighed my ceramics with 5 rifle mags and 1 pistol mag and you were almost dead on. 24 pounds. It's just more reason to live a healthier (I'm not giving up wings and beer for shit) lifestyle and staying fit.
He's just saying what I've been saying. If it's for show and tell or looks, a fixed magazine is fine. But for actual use, it is not.So you are saying a fixed mag SCAR 17 is the same as a fixed mag AR in operation?

I'm with the M1A camp. My only criticism is they could use an update to run SR-25 mags
Correct. For show only.Look at the top left corner of this webpage. There it is - a fixed mag AR!
