it's way cheaper if you use the same quality parts. but there's just something about building your own rifle that makes you cringe at putting a mil-spec trigger and drop-in handguards on something you're putting all of this work into.
I think that Centurion handguard is a bit cheaper than the DD Slim Rail. The barrel is a little less expensive too. Charging handles are a wash, as are the triggers (same trigger in both) BCG is a little more but not by much. I did score a killer deal on the DD in the first place, nowhere near MSRP.

It is cheaper, but only somewhat so. At least in my particular case. There is only one component of the DD that I have replaced, that being the trigger. Everything thing else came GTG.

the round is a good target caliber. Launching 80 and 90 grain 22 pills will be a lot easier with the increased case capacity.
Won't be until late 2018, got a vacation scheduled. Most likely it will end up in one of my 700s.
My point was just that while you can certainly buy an AR for $500, the buyer will undoubtedly want to mod it and will then dump $$$ into making it what they really wanted in the first place. So picking your own parts and building that AR for 1k +/- is comprable if not cheaper than buying that $500 AR, just to get an AR, only to then put another $500 +/- in upgrades.

That is certainly true. Anything I'll ever want on the new carbine I already have on it, or will shortly.
