I just read a bunch of reviews I won't be buying the American series dies anytime soon. Wow I should have done my research first, lots of good stories. I still might get a set of dies for the rifle but I won't be buying those.
We don't know that right?Good shot, but I hate hunters that kill for fun.
OK I got the scope base in and have a question for the pros. I dry fitted the base to see if I needed to bed it. Well when I tighten the front screws there's a slight gap in the rear. I can't fit an idea card in but barley a normal piece of paper will slide under. When I put in the back screws the front has a bigger gap. I can fit an index card under it. So should I bed the front? Or is that slight of a gap OK? Also the rifle came with a metal shim to put under the rear. Should I use this and see if the base fits better or worse? I'm not looking for extreme distance here. I will probably zero at 200 and has a non adjustable turrets so I would be doping the scope.
squib,This thread needs a title change to precision/match rifle
I just did a double check it does not have a recoil lug. That doesn't seem too bad. IMO I would just torque the front more and then back so very slightly just to make sure the epoxy is squeezed and all is aligned but not forcing it down nor bending it in the back.
BTW is there a recoil cut/notch in the the front of that base?
like seen here...
Not a problem. It is not like a heavy magnum.I just did a double check it does not have a recoil lug.

This one isn't a precision rifle but I'm not going to lie I have been kicking around the idea of a build. I'm thinking a light weight 6.5 creedmoore. Something fun to eventually do some PRS matches.
squib,
Why change it?
All very true. My thought is to try to have rifles tailored to fit certain roles how I see fit. It's hard to get a rifle that can do everything without compromises. Take for instance what I call my "bench gun" it's a stock savage in 308. I never used this gun to hunt for the sole fact is it's freaking heavy. If I was required to shoot it unsupported I would have a small window to make a good shot. But the gun is a blast to shoot from the bench or prone. I have no problem hitting 4" at 300 yds and a ipsc torso at 600. I have no doubt I could push it farther I just haven't pushed it yet.I see no difference.
An accurate rifle is an accurate rifle. What is a precision rifle other than an accurate rifle?
Of course you don't want a 5lb rifle for a win mag but that is a different story.
lots of development for a "hunting rifle"
The discussion has been long but no much development.
The concepts we are discussing apply to any role, any kind of rifle.
The hunting can be 50 yards or can be 800 yards depending what you are hunting right?
So having a sub moa hunting rifle is a good thing no matter what.
We are talking simple improvements here. Baby steps ..

I see your point but also in the real world a 308 can easily take the role of a 243, a 270 and a 30-06.
So with careful planning and good ammo or careful load development the 308 might do 99% of what a given person might ever need.
Of course there is appealing for other more specialized rifles but how many times we are going to exhaust the possibilities of something
as versatile as the 308w. Or the 7mm-08 same thing that as of today it is the best long range round derived from the 308 case as donor.
Whatever we do is all applicable in order contexts and calibers and all fun at the end of the day that is what matters the most.
I'm in the same camp as far as hunting rifles. cold bore shot in a 3inch target @100yds is plenty accurate. It's hard to measure groups on dead things. For a hunting rifle I just grab some decent rings and throw the optic on. Then I grab a few
Boxes of quality hunting Ammo and see what groups best.I guess I'm lazy ha. 800 yard shots are unethical for the vast majority of hunters in my opinion. I have no issue with the tread title. It just seems like a whole lot of work for a deer flattener. If one enjoys this level of tinkering on their hunting rifle then have at it! There are much worse ways of spending time and money. I have not read the entire thread yet. Was the ride not shooting well out of the box?ca

What game has a sub moa vital area?
The idea is the same. Even with some inexpensive bases, sometimes on sale, one has to go through the motions but w/o spending an eye.I agree there are calibers that really have a wide range of uses. I see a 7mm-08 in my future also. I like my 308's and they do everything I ask of them but for some reason I desire other calibers. I also have no doubt that more 308's are in my future also.
Also don't look too closely at that savage meke, the scope mounting is terrible. I keep saying I'm going to fix it just other projects have jumped in front of it.
Realistically about how much do you think all this bedding and other work will improve groups? Im all for mek showing improvements on crap stocks that come with the American. If
It makes a difference that's measurable I will give
It a go. Fun project but not needed on my American. It shoots around an inch and I don't shoot past 200 where i hunt.
