I’m not very familiar as well, I knew my rifle was GTG when I came to a similar match the month before and saw the kinds of rifle they were shooting.
You can scroll through their club photos to see what I mean:
Forbes Rifle & Pistol Club - Long Range Target Shooting in Colonie, New York -...
They submit your scores to the NRA for classification so I think they do the matches under NRA highpower rules.
What did you mean exactly when you ask “any”? I’ve seen shooters run pretty serious looking rigs.
I did try 168 & 175. Except for a slightly different drop and a slightly harder kick, at my level, I can’t see a difference.
If anything, I thought the lower weight with flatter flight would be an advantage at 300. But, looking at my vertical oblong groups, I have other issues than bullets...
An older gentleman gave me some pointers into “how to get good at this thing” and one of them was to hang put with the good shooters and I think there’s a bunch of them in this league hahaha
Of all the hobbies/sports I’ve done before, this is the only one she has asked to try and taken a real interest in. I’m just waiting on this rod&gun club membership application to push through, then I’ll take her to the range.

If there was a trend due to barrel temperature, wouldn’t have noticed due to the all the other factors..shooter related. The F class guys were drilling their targets, though. I heard someone call for target repair after about 5...
I participated in my first midrange match on Saturday, 300yd slow fire prone using a sling.
Perfect weather so no excuse for a poor shots. I was nervous going into the first match, settled down for my best score on the second, then I form broke down on the last match. Overall, I averaged an...
Resurrecting this thread...
This is the second time out with the Bergara HMR 308, testing it (and myself) out at the Sheepdog Warrior range.
So far I’ve run about 30 rounds each of PPU Match (both 155gr 175gr) and Federal Gold Medal SMK 168gr. It was mostly for trying out the difference in...
Also, I think about warranty. You mount your scope and it doesn't seem to keep its zero..or it slipped during recoil..or remount to another base or gun but won't screw in correctly. "DID YOU TORQUE IT TO SPEC?" -optic company
Not so fresh out of the box, waiting on scope/mount/rings.
Largely because of @meketrefe ’s posts and a few comments from some old high power guys shooting a 300yard match in the area: 308 Bergara HMR
Not to hijack the thread, I think it’s very much related: What’s the sight picture using these rifles? I’m curious as to how Morgan’s riflemen hit a 7in circle at 250 paces. Google image search isn’t very good at showing the sights.
I do! I’m just waiting for approval from my lady boss. Sorry I forgot to tell you the Appleseed was the same weekend as the practice match at your club, I wouldn’t have missed it otherwise.
No parade rained on: Hard to make out with the pixelation but that yellow/brown smudge is my right sole. I’m trying my best to do the Tubb sitting position as described in his book.
It was 2hrs from home but it was worth the 8hr drive over the weekend. Had a BLAST..~600rounds of 22lr + we got to shoot a couple of the instructors’ rifles. It was my first time shooting a 223 & a 308 and a bolt action to boot...I AM HOOKED.
AAR here: Leyden, MA AAR - Aug. 24-25, 2019...
I was skimming through some old threads and have been reading more about high power rifle comps. I think I’m starting to understand where you’re coming from when you say CMT is the way to go. Too late for the SAFS butI’m already hoping I could do the one next year.

I’m trying to chew the meat and spit out the bones but at this point, A LOT of bony stuff still feels mighty chewy to me.
I get it though, and this whole thread makes me want to be a better shooter without a sling, but don’t knock my interest to shoot well w/ a sling too.
To use your analogy...
@Podmonkey My ultimate goal, admittedly, is the most unpractical of situations: I want to get into long range shooting where I probably won't shoot w/ a sling.
@Mosinitis My references in shooting: Cleckner's long range shooting handbook, Appleseed material and that USMC video I posted about...
@Podmonkey Shot with a sling today, groups tightened up a bit.
@GUNSICK Left three targets using cheapo thunderbolts I bought w/ my rifle and the right three targets w/ the cci mini-mags I got today. Probably, at my level and at this distance, ammo isn’t such a big factor in accuracy. BUT...
@Mosinitis Marksmanship experience? Trying to talking the talk, purely faking it til I make it hahaha.
But a lot of things cross over from archery: attention to postural details and consistency.
The Youtube screen grabs show what I try to emulate, although with a slight “wing” because of the 10/22’s grip. I did try the biathlon style stance but I struggle w/ he support hand grip: I’m on my fingertips and I still crane my neck down to get good sight alignment.
Ammo: Fiocchi high...
I’m gearing up for an appleseed next month and I’ve been dry firing in seated, kneeling and prone using CMP high power rifle videos on youtube as guide.
So far, I only have access to a couple of indoor ranges and I don’t they’d let me try alternate shooting positions...but I’ve never asked.
fewer groups per target, gotcha. Next time, I’ll use the back side of the paper and try drill 1 sticky w/ enough rest in between reloads. Load 5 per mag so I won’t be tempted..
I’ll put this embarrassing attempt here as a future reference.
Shot offhand at 25yards after a few shots off the bench to check if my sights are near where I want it to be. I would say I tried to zero my 10/22 but I understand one can only zero as good as one can shoot and...you can see for...
Thank you and thank you. I treated living here as a privilege and acted as a guest. I'm still starting to grasp how to act as a responsible American in MY country.
It's still surreal to say it (even just typing it), MY country.
It's an hour away from me, but it wouldn't be a problem. The only thing is I work the 2nd shift and I don't get off until late at night (thus my posting this at midnight).
Thank you, nonetheless..I will treat this as an invite and will find a Friday off after the Appleseed next month.

A couple of years ago, I was reading an unrelated topic online when I came across Project Appleseed. Fast forward to last month when I took my oath as an American, my first few acts as a citizen were to register to vote, apply for a passport... and buy a Ruger 10/22.
I’m now registered for an...
