Only way he could have been charged with a crime if this was NY is if he lacked a pistol permit, like in the case of the homeowner who used his deceased father’s gun. But not for murder, even by NY standards this shooting is 100% justified end of story.

NY’s red flag law just makes it easier to disarm those that don’t have pistol permits, but own rifles & shotguns.

There is no such thing as a gun trafficking crime, there shouldn’t be “gun crimes” in the first place for mere possession. The only crimes that should ever exist gun wise is using one during the commission of a crime (murder, robbery, assault, menacing, etc).
